Surprise Your Beloved One on St. Valentine’s Day
You have just managed to “recover” from picking up presents and celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Day, but already started feeling that love is in the air? That means there’s one and a half month till another holiday is here – St. Valentine’s Day. Did you know that nowadays around 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas!
It is believed that Americans began sending each other handmade valentines in the early 1700s. Later, in the 1840s, Esther A. Howland started mass-producing and selling valentines throughout America. Also known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” back then Howland created colorful pictures with real lace and bright ribbons. Nowadays, according to the Greeting Card Association, women purchase an estimated 85 percent of all valentines.
So where does this romantic tradition come from and how is it connected to that mysterious saint?
As the legend goes, Valentine’s day started as a celebration for an early-century Roman Christian priest named Valentinus who was known to bring together loved ones and performed weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. After being imprisoned for his deeds, he is believed to have cured the blind daughter of his jailer and sent her a letter signed ‘from your Valentine’ before his execution. Another legend suggests that Valentine may have been executed for helping Christians escape from the tortures in Roman prisons. As one story was told, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” after he fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his imprisonment. When writing the letter before his death, he signed it with the symbolic expression “From your Valentine” that is still used nowadays. Actually the truth behind these legends is questionable, but the stories all stress the saint to be an exceptionally sympathetic, brave and romantic individual.
